Mad Love 21:01

about

Based on André Breton's book of the same name, I wrote "Mad Love" in 1995. Originally scored for 4 singers and 4 instrumentalists (cello, bass clarinet, percussion and electric guitar), in 2020 I re-imagined the piece, adding instruments and changing the sung text to be whispered/spoken.

"Mad Love" explores the ideas of subliminal messaging, talking in your sleep, and multiple voices in your head. The music and the text both go through a metamorphosis. Read text breaks down into phonemes and then into pure sound and finally back to spoken text. The music superimposes rhythmic figures creating new rhythms from composites, ending in a cello solo melody derived from the previous development. All with a ear to putting Breton's use of the Hegelian dialectic to music. The overall effect aims for what Arthur Rimbaud calls "the systematic derangement of the senses".
