about

Neuropaths is my third set of pieces that use unconscious brain wave activity to make musical decisions. As before I pre-program the synth patches that are available to choose from. And with these new pieces, I pre-compose a set of short sequences to loop. My brain wave activity is sent via EEG headset to my laptop which takes running averages. Peaks trigger various patches and loops, and lows trigger others. I can then play along to the synth loops with live drums, drum triggers, waterphone and bass clarinet, the last two which are running through effects also processed by brain wave activity. I see the unconscious brain waves as taking me down unknown nueropaths while my conscious brain improvises other paths in a feedback loop between the conscious and unconscious. I’m exploring the grey area between rational and intuitive thought, will and conditioning, the objective and subjective, free will and determinism.
